Di masa lalu, Anda mungkin pernah mengikuti kelas manajemen waktu, atau membacanya di buku, dan telah berusaha mengatur, memprioritaskan dan membuat jadwal hari Anda memakai perencana waktu elektronik maupun kertas. Lalu Anda bertanya, “Dengan semua pengetahuan dan gadget perencana waktu, mengapa saya masih tidak bisa menyelesaikan pekerjaan saya?”
Jawabannya simpel. Semua yang telah Anda pelajari tentang bagaimana mengatur waktu adalah buang-buang waktu karena tidak efektif.

Sebelum Anda bisa me-manage waktu, Anda harus mengerti apakah waktu itu. Menurut kamus, waktu adalah “saat atau periode dimana hal-hal terjadi.” Sederhananya, waktu adalah saat dimana hal-hal terjadi.

Ada dua jenis waktu: waktu menurut jam dan waktu sebenarnya. Dalam waktu menurut jam, ada 60 detik dalam semenit, 60 menit dalam satu jam, 24 jam sehari dan 365 hari setahun. Semua waktu berjalan dengan kecepatan yang sama. Ketika seseorang beranjak 50, umurnya menjadi 50 tahun, tidak lebih tua, tidak lebih muda.

Dalam waktu sebenarnya, semua waktu itu relatif. Waktu dapat berjalan cepat atau lambat tergantung yang Anda kerjakan. Dua jam di Kantor Polisi mengurus SIM dapat terasa seperti 12 tahun. Sebaliknya, si kecil tiba-tiba sudah berusia 12 tahun dalam waktu singkat.
Apakah hidup Anda menurut waktu sebenarnya, atau waktu arloji?

Gadget dan sistem manajemen waktu tidak efektif karena mereka didesain untuk mengelola waktu arloji. Waktu arloji tidak relevan. Anda tidak hidup dalam waktu arloji. Anda hidup di waktu sebenarnya, dimana waktu berjalan cepat ketika Anda bergembira dan berjalan lambat ketika Anda susah.

Waktu sebenarnya adalah hasil ciptaan Anda, dan bisa dapat Anda kelola. Sudah waktunya Anda mengubah pola pikir Anda bahwa Anda “tidak punya cukup waktu” atau “sekarang bukan waktu yang tepat” untuk mulai berbisnis atau mengelola sebaik-baiknya bisnis yang Anda punya.
Hanya ada tiga cara untuk menjalani waktu, yaitu dengan berpikir, berbincang dan bertindak. Apapun tipe bisnis Anda, Anda bekerja dengan tiga hal tersebut.

Sebagai seorang wirausahawan, tentu banyak gangguan ataupun hambatan. Gangguan-gangguan itu tidak mungkin hilang, tapi Anda bisa menentukan apakah Anda akan menghabiskan waktu mengurusinya, ataukah Anda akan berpikir, berbincang dan bertindak menuju sukses.
Praktekkan teknik-teknik berikut untuk menjadi tuan dari waktu Anda sendiri:

1. Buat jadwal dan catat semua pikiran, perbincangan dan tindakan Anda selama seminggu. Ini akan membantu Anda memahami berapa banyak yang Anda selesaikan dalam sehari dan waktu Anda dihabiskan untuk apa. Anda akan mengetahui berapa banyak waktu yang digunakan untuk hal-hal produktif dan berapa banyak untuk pikiran, perbicangan dan tindakan yang tak produktif.

2. Alokasikan waktu untuk tindakan atau perbincangan yang penting untuk kesuksesan Anda. To-do-list Anda mungkin panjang sehingga tak bisa Anda kerjakan. Miliki buku appointment. Jadwalkan appointment dengan Anda sendiri dan luangkan waktu untuk pikiran, perbincangan dan tindakan prioritas. Jadwalkan jam mulai dan jam selesai. Disiplinkan diri untuk menepati appointment ini.

3. Buat rencana untuk meluangkan setidaknya 50 persen waktu Anda untuk pikiran, perbincangan dan tindakan yang produktif.

4. Buat jadwal untuk saat-saat dimana Anda akan berhenti sejenak dari pekerjaan Anda. Misalnya, buatlah “jam kantor”.

5. Luangkan 30 menit pertama di hari Anda untuk merencanakan hari Anda. Jangan mulai hari tanpa menyelesaikan rencana ini. Waktu paling penting dalam hari Anda adalah saat Anda menjadwalkan waktu Anda.

6. Luangkan 5 menit sebelum bertindak untuk menentukan hasil apa yang ingin Anda capai. Ini akan memberi Anda gambaran sukses sebelum Anda mulai. Ini juga akan memperlambat waktu. Luangkan 5 menit setelah bertindak untuk menentukan apakah hasil yang ingin dicapai benar-benar tercapai. Bila tidak, apa kekurangannya? Bagaimana mengatasi kekurangan ini setelah tindakan berikutnya?

7. Pasang tanda “Jangan ganggu” bila ada yang benar-benar harus diselesaikan.

8. Tahan diri dari menjawab telepon hanya gara-gara telepon berdering, dan jangan baca e-mail hanya gara-gara e-mail datang. Putus koneksi instant messaging. Jangan langsung balas pesan kecuali memang benar-benar mendesak bagi bisnis untuk memberi tanggapan. Buat jadwal waktu membalas e-mail dan telepon.

9. Blok gangguan-gangguan lain seperti Facebook atau media sosial lain kecuali bila dipakai untuk bisnis.

10. Ingat, tidak mungkin mengerjakan semuanya. Ingat pula bahwa 20 persen pikiran, perbincangan dan tindakan Anda membuahkan 80 persen hasil.
